2017 MLS Cup Playoff Predictions: Knockout Round Edition
The 2017 MLS Cup playoffs start tonight, so just under the wire, here are some predictions. Without Orlando City in the playoffs yet again, I don’t have a horse in this race. That said I think there are some enticing matchups in this first round.
Vancouver Whitecaps v. San Jose Earthquakes
Vancouver is a very overpowered third seed in the West. One point from the top, the ‘Caps have to be feel unfairly done to have played so well and wrap the season in third. Does that give them a chip on their shoulder? Just maybe. Despite the San Jose Earthquakes dramatic entry into the postseason, I think the ‘Caps take this one.
Houston Dynamo v. Sporting Kansas City
Not as cut and dry as the other match-up in the West. With only one point separating these teams in the final season table, I think it’s only a goal that will separate them on the field. Maybe home field advantage is the differance, Dynamo by one goal.
Chicago Fire v. New York Red Bull
By far the most exciting of match-ups of this Knockout Stage. NYRB have that tendency to show up and always be a contender. That said, I think this is the Fire’s year to payback the faithful. This will be close, but Fire prevail.
Atlanta United v. Columbus Crew
I should learn my lesson and stop betting against Atlanta United. They have confounded every expectation of expansion teams. That said, I feel like the magic has to end at some point for this team, they just seem too charmed. I’ve also made a habit of betting against the Crew over the years, and can’t see myself keeping that tradition going. Plus, we all want to see the #SaveTheCrew campaign keep going deep into the offseason.
So there they are, a first round of predictions for the MLS Cup Knockout Stage.
